Exploration 11

There were many good passages in the speeches so it was hard to pick a favorite. I choose: "Let the strivings of us all prove Martin Luther King Jr. to have been correct, when he said that humanity can no longer be tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war. Let the efforts of us all prove that he was not a mere dreamer when he spoke of the beauty of genuine brotherhood..."
Referring to Dr. King in his speech gave it emphasis, Dr. King wanted to unit everyone and that's what these Nobel Prize Winners are trying to accomplish.

In doing some research I found that South Africa is highly supported by the US. The US and South Africa have been working together in trade and defense. The US is assisting in health care, increased education and training, combating gender-based violence, and promoting HIV/AIDS care, prevention, and treatment. I didn't know the US and South Africa had a relationship to that extent. http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2898.htm

Obama and the Dalai Lama before their discussion of support from the US for Tibetan identity. 07-16-2011.

The Dalai Lama is the highest-ranking lama (spiritual master) of Tibetan Buddhism. Since the 17th century, the Dalai Lama has been the political and spiritual leader of Tibet. He also is considered an emanation of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, an iconic figure who represents boundless compassion. I found it interesting that they let a 4 year old take the throne but it's their way of doing things. For years the Dalai Lama has been trying to prevent total Chinese take over of Tibet. Tibet society lives in complete isolation from the rest of the world. The Dalai Lama has been in exile for over 50 years, believed to be caused by the threat of assassination from the general of a Chinese army.

  3. What's even more interesting is how well the choice worked out. A good man as a politician? Unheard of! Maybe we should start choosing our leaders off of this method.
