Chapter thirteen is my favorite because when grandpa dies they stick together and stay united. Not only do they bury him but they have the preacher say a few words just like every passed relative which means a lot even though it is done without a full blown funeral, but they did what they could. Following what they were set out to do they continue on there way to California to make a living again and live the American dream of owning a home.
"Grandpa seemed to be struggling; all his muscles twitched. and suddenly he jarred as though under a heavy blow. He lay still and his breath was stopped." this is such a realistic live event that it really makes the book come alive and show how terrible things can happen at the worst time but you have to keep on going on no matter how hard it is.
This is definitely a very realistic scene. It shows the strength of the Joad family, to persevere and come together as a family. They do what they can with what they have, and that is what matters.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great quote there. You can almost visualize the whole thing as if you were right there with them. I was encouraged to see them stick together as well, how easily they could have fallen a part right then and there. Everything seemed to be going against them thus far how much more than would a death of a relative push them back? But, no! They stuck together and pressed on, keeping their eyes on the light at the end of the tunnel. Good for them!
ReplyDeleteI liked this passage a lot. It shows the struggles that they family had to face on their way to California, and that even though Grampa's death is hard on them, they have to keep going.

ReplyDeleteI liked this chapter as well. Fighting through the loss of a family member is never easy, especially if you are dealing with the circumstances that the Joads are. It shows their toughness and perseverence.
